Looks like a normal legless awning, but has 480 to 960 watts of solar fabric.

Roof space is limited, but the Girard GG750 Solar Awning gives you a way to add meaningful solar generation (480 to 960 watts depending on the length) without sacrificing room for roof fans, AC units, racks, storage, or rooftop access. Built on the black Girard GG750 cassette and paired with Apollo solar fabric, it combines shade and solar production in one legless 12V awning system. This is a strong fit for vans, RVs, trailers, and some building applications.

The solar awning is available in five lengths and can be configured with your preferred control package and motor location (right-hand or left-hand motor). Choose from a hardwired motion sensor and rocker switch package, a G-Link RF Wall Switch + Motion Sensor, or an RV-C + Motion Sensor.

It is especially compelling for larger vans or RVs where the roof is already crowded or maxed out with solar, vents, and roof penetrations. On bigger platforms, customers can maximize the roof and add one or even two solar awnings to dramatically increase total available solar capacity. If you are trying to reduce generator use, shore power dependence, or roof congestion, this awning creates a new solar surface on the side of the vehicle instead of competing for roof real estate.

Important Info

This solar awning is heavier than a traditional side awning and requires adequate mounting support. Always verify structure, bracket compatibility, available mounting space, and installation method before ordering or replacing an existing awning. Since they are made to order, there are no returns. A motion sensor is required on every Girard solar awning and must be properly installed to maintain warranty coverage.

Control Package Options

  1. Hardwired Switch + Motion Sensor, 98GCK-49B: Hardwired wall switch and motion sensor package with IN, OUT, STOP, LED light control, and adjustable motion sensitivity. This is the most popular wired control option.
  2. G-Link RF Wall Switch + Motion Sensor, 2022304333 / 98GCK-45S: Includes the 98GC1146C motor controller, 98GC779G motion sensor, and 98GC660B 1-channel wireless wall switch. The wall switch communicates with the awning through Girard G-Link RF, reducing the need to run control wiring to the wall switch. The motion sensor itself still requires an electrical connection at the awning.
  3. RV-C Control + Motion Sensor: RV-C control package configured with a dedicated 12V motor controller, RV-C manual wall controller, and RV-C motion sensor. This provides an RV-C-based alternative to the standard hardwired and G-Link RF control packages. Confirm compatibility with your vehicle's RV-C system before ordering. Currently only compatible with Garmin One systems with Artek integration. Contact us if interested.
  4. Smart / Multiplex Control: The RV-C control package uses dedicated RV-C components. For other smart or multiplex installations using dry-contact commands, Girard also offers a separate G-Link configuration using the GC1149A dry contact module as a bridge. Contact us before ordering a smart-system configuration so the correct controls can be confirmed.

Motor Side Options

  1. Right-Hand Motor: The motor is on the right side when standing outside the vehicle and facing the awning.
  2. Left-Hand Motor: The motor is on the left side when standing outside the vehicle and facing the awning.

Motor side should be selected based on the vehicle layout and where power will be supplied to the awning. For example, a vehicle with the awning power source toward the rear may use a left-hand motor to place the motor closer to that power source.

Why Choose a Solar Awning Over Roof Panels

Roof space disappears quickly on a van or RV. Fans, air conditioners, storage boxes, roof racks, antennas, and access paths all compete with fixed solar panels. The GG750 Solar Awning creates an additional solar surface along the side of the vehicle, allowing the roof to remain available for other equipment. On larger vehicles, it can supplement an existing roof-mounted solar array without requiring additional roof penetrations.

For many builds, that means you can keep your roof fan, rooftop AC, storage or rack space, and still add serious solar wattage. On large vans like Sprinter 170 EXT, Transit 148 EXT, and ProMaster 159 Extended, this can be a powerful way to expand total solar capacity beyond what roof-only systems usually allow (up to 3175 watts ON A VAN when paired with our roof racks).

Installation Notes

The solar awning should be treated as a solar source that connects to an existing electrical system through an appropriately sized solar charge controller. It is not a complete standalone solar system. Many customers will add it to an existing Victron-based system, but final controller choice and wiring layout should be based on awning size and the rest of the system design.

In many cases, this can replace an existing awning, but customers should verify mounting compatibility, structural support, available space, motor side, wiring path, and electrical integration before ordering. Because this unit is heavier than a standard side awning, support requirements matter.

Frequently Asked Questions (click to expand)

1. What makes a solar awning different from a standard awning?

A solar awning gives you shade and solar generation in one product, helping you add power without taking up valuable roof space.

2. How much power does each size produce?

Depending on size, the GG750 Solar Awning produces from 480W up to 960W.

3. How do I connect this to my existing electrical system?

This awning connects to your electrical system through an appropriate solar charge controller. Many customers add it to an existing system, but final controller choice and wiring layout should match the awning size and overall system design.

4. What Victron MPPT controller should I use?

Recommended Victron controller sizing depends on awning size. See the controller table above for suggested MPPT models for 12V battery systems.

5. What is the difference between the hardwired and G-Link RF control packages?

The hardwired package uses a wired wall switch and motion sensor. The G-Link RF package uses an RF wall switch communicating with the Girard G-Link controller and also includes a motion sensor.

6. Is this heavier than a traditional side awning?

Yes. This solar awning is heavier than a traditional side awning, so proper support and installation planning are important.

7. What does the motion sensor do?

Girard's motion sensor detects awning movement and can automatically command the awning to retract in windy conditions. Sensitivity is adjustable. It does not replace the need to retract the awning during high winds or heavy weather.

8. How do I choose right-hand or left-hand motor?

Motor side is determined while standing outside the vehicle and facing the awning. Choose the side that best matches where power will be supplied to the awning.

9. How long does production take?

These are made to order in Indiana and typically require 2 weeks of production before shipping.

10. Can this awning work with my RV's multiplex or smart-control system?

Girard offers a dry-contact G-Link configuration using the GC1149A module for compatible smart-control systems. Contact us before ordering so the required controls can be confirmed.
